How it works

01

Moon visibility science

The Islamic month begins when the new crescent (hilal) is observed after sunset. The exact timing depends on your location, atmospheric conditions, and the moon’s position relative to the sun.

02

Sistani’s guidelines

Ayatollah Sistani requires the crescent to be visible to the naked eye — telescopes don’t count. A sighting in one city can count for another that shares the same horizon.

03

Our methodology

We use the Odeh visibility criterion and NASA-grade ephemeris data (Skyfield) to predict naked-eye visibility. This is an astronomical prediction, not a religious ruling.
